The British Lido

The term Lido refers to a public outdoor swimming pool. During the 1930s, 169 lidos were built in the UK. Today many of these have fallen derelict.

Broomhill Pool is in Ipswich (not Norwich) and was closed in 2002. The campaign to save it has been ongoing since that time and a bid for Heritage Lottery Funding was submitted in March this year (2008)

The Heritage Lottery Fund have recently rejected the bid on the grounds that the site's owners - Ipswich Borough Council - needed to show greater "commitment". The Council had promised £1 million towards the restoration, but it was not secured sufficiently. (By contrast they were prepared to pledge over £2 million towards their own bid for Holywells Park, under the Parks for People programme.)

The Broomhill Pool Trust will now have talks with both the HLF and Ipswich Borough Council.

Janet Smith's book "Liquid Assets - the lidos and open air pools of Britain" was published in 2005 and contains beautiful photos of lidos past and present.

There is also Oliver Merrington's Lidos Group http:// groups.yahoo.com/ group/lidos

for those seeking more info on which lidos are still open, current campaigns etc. The London Fields Lido in Hackney re-opened in October 2006 after a campaign lasting nearly 20 years and Droitwich Lido re-opened in 2007 after a six year fight.
